positive displacement pumpA large pork processing plant was using small gear pumps to apply Peracetic Acid (PAA) directly onto meat along its production lines. PAA is a powerful oxidizing biocide commonly used across the meat and dairy industries to eliminate E. coli and other harmful microorganisms. After application, the acid rapidly breaks down into a harmless byproduct, making it safe for food processing environments.

However, PAA’s highly corrosive nature caused frequent equipment failure. The gear pumps required replacement every two weeks or less, resulting in increased maintenance costs and production interruptions.

To address this challenge, the plant evaluated a Hydra-Cell® M03/D03 multi-diaphragm, positive displacement pump from Wanner Engineering. Featuring a seal-less design with multiple diaphragms driven by a common shaft, the pump safely contains corrosive chemicals like PAA while delivering smooth, precise, and consistent flow. Its corrosion-resistant construction dramatically improved durability, allowing the pump to operate reliably for more than five months.

With significantly lower total operating costs and improved uptime, the processor quickly expanded its installation, ordering three additional Hydra-Cell® M03/D03 pumps for its facility.
